In an unprecedented move, the New England Patriots are allowing fans to exchange an unwanted jersey. Aaron Hernandez’s No. 81 jersey can be exchanged at the Patriots Pro Shop for any other new jersey of comparable value.
Hernandez was released from the team after he was taken into custody for murder. While many fans frequently get stuck with jerseys of released or traded players, it is uncommon for a team to allow an exchange. No one wants to wear a jersey of someone who is publicly disgraced.
The Patriots are thinking of the children with the move.
The website quotes their spokesman, Stacey James, “We know that children love wearing their Patriots jerseys but may not understand why parents don’t want them wearing their Hernandez jerseys anymore.”
It is a classy move by a classy organization.
