NBC’s “Hannibal” had the odd distinction of being the only scripted program from NBC’s lineup that was neither canceled or renewed at the upfront presentation earlier this month. However, “Hannibal” will once again be on NBC’s menu in 2014.
“Hannibal” has been officially renewed by NBC, with a second season of 13 episodes slated to be broadcast next year during midseason. Developed by Bryan Fuller, “Hannibal” stars Mads Mikkelsen stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Hugh Dancy as FBI Special Agent Will Graham and Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford in addition to Caroline Dhavernas as Dr. Alana Bloom and Hettienne Park as Special Agent Beverly Katz.
In a brief statement, NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said “We’re so proud of Bryan’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling. There are many great stories still to be told.”
The decision to renew “Hannibal” was probably made easier by the apparent interest that Amazon.com and an unnamed cable network reportedly had in picking up “Hannibal” if it had been dropped by NBC. Because “Hannibal” is produced by Gaumont International Television and pre-sold in several international markets, the asking price for the series’ U.S. broadcasting rights are reportedly very low for a drama series with high production values.
The 13 episode pickup is also three more than “Hannibal” received for its first season; which is currently airing Thursday nights on NBC through June 20.
