The Guardian Has Opened a Coffee Shop (No, This Isn’t a Joke)

Considering the slow demise of the printed word, newspapers such as The Guardian are understandably struggling to maintain their relevancy. Their website is successful enough, but when you’re competing with the batshit insane behemoth that is the Mail Online, it may be time to start looking at other avenues to help boost revenue.

Enter The Guardian Coffee Shop, or #GUARDIANCOFFEE as it would like to be known.

Getting a coffee is the favourite pastime of prolific Instagrammers and Macbook owners, but up until now Starbucks has had the monopoly on lattes, cappuccinos and whatever those sickly concoctions of cream and chocolate are called. However, The Guardian Newspaper is now making a move to become the London hipster’s go-to destination to take photographs of themselves sipping overpriced caffeine, unveiling the first #GUARDIANCOFFEE shop today in trendy Shoreditch.

A spokesperson for The Guardian said of the shop: “#guardiancoffee is a fantastic example of how we are bringing our open journalism approach to life, by taking our leading technology reporting to where technology actually is: driving real-time debate and engagement among the creative tech community.

“People will also be able to drop in to find out more about The Guardian‘s innovative approach to storytelling, and to enjoy some great food and drinks from local micro-roastery Nude Espresso.”
 

However, Twitter user Jim Waterson tweeted: “Infographics everywhere, iPads built into tables, not a newspaper in sight 🙁 “​
