Back in 2002, Martin Scorsese directed Gangs of New York, a film that starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz. The story took place largely in 1862 as rival gangs clashed in the streets of the city.
According to Deadline, Scorsese is currently developing “Gangs of New York” as a TV series alongside Miramax. The proposed “Gangs of New York” television show would widen the scope beyond New York and include other cities like Chicago and New Orleans while chronicling the birth of organized crime in America.
In a statement, Scorsese said “this time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.”
This project doesn’t currently appear to have a network attached to it, but that should change very quickly once Scorsese and Miramax begin shopping it around. Scorsese is already the executive producer of another acclaimed period drama, “Boardwalk Empire” on HBO. Scorsese also won an Emmy Award for directing the pilot episode of “Boardwalk Empire.”
Another Scorsese film, Goodfellas was optioned as a TV series last year by AMC. However, Scorsese was not involved with that project and there hasn’t been any movement on that in months.
