Exclusive: Will Forte Will Write MacGruber 2

We must be doing something right by the universe because we seem to have landed the only Will Forte interview of his current press tour. After meeting Forte at the That’s My Boy press conference over the weekend, we got the opportunity for an exclusive interview with Forte by phone today, even though he’s busy getting ready to travel for his next film tomorrow.

We’ll have the full That’s My Boy interview for you next week, but since this all came about by talking about Macgruber 2 over the weekend, Forte clarified his earlier comments. He said he was truly surprised to be asked about Macgruber 2 so he wasn’t entirely prepared. However, his skepticism that it wouldn’t happen was just cautious pessimism. He and Jorma Taccone are planning to write a sequel, regardless of whether or not it gets made.

“I wasn’t prepared to answer anything about Macgruber 2 when I was talking to everybody on Saturday,” Forte said on the phone today. “I guess the best way to put it is the probability of us writing a Macgruber 2 script in the next six months is 100%. The probability of somebody giving us money to make that script is somewhat less than 100%. We would do it if someone were to let us do it.”

So that is reason to be happy. Most fanboy dream sequels never get to the scripting stage, and once something exists it makes it a whole lot easier to talk about budgets and shooting. The script will exist.

“We will definitely write a Macgruber 2 if only just to have fun,” Forte said. “Like people who are into sports will go out and play pickup basketball. Comedy nerds will go write scripts. We actually have some ideas written down already and a couple of scenes but we’ve got to figure out exactly what we’re going to do. We’re definitely going to write it. It’s just a matter of if anybody would ever let us make it.”

Forte continued to joke about possible non-spoiler plotlines. We’ll bring you the full interview, with all the That’s My Boy fun and more Macgruber 2 next week.
