Fans of the USA series “Psych” have reason to celebrate. The series will get a seventh season later this year.
On Tuesday, USA made an unconventional announcement of the news by using “Psych’s” Twitter and Facebook accounts to gradually disseminate pieces of a pineapple puzzle that led to a short video of series stars, James Roday and Dule Hill. During the video, Roday nonchalantly stated “Oh, and also, ‘Psych’ is officially coming back for a seventh season, which is very cool, but I’m kinda working on this belt situation right now.” Prior to the big news, Roday said that his character, Shawn Spencer is attempting to achieve a brown belt.
USA Network co-presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel released a joint statement confirming the news that read “We are always trying to find ways to reward our Psych brand ambassadors for their loyalty and passion and social media plays a critical role in how we connect with the people who matter most — the fans. It was exciting to deliver this historical news to them first and before traditional media.”
Created by Steve Franks in 2006, “Psych” follows Shawn Spencer (Roday) a fake psychic who uses his keen observational skills to assist the Santa Barbara Police department on unusual cases. Hill also stars as Burton “Gus” Guster, Shawn’s best friend and business partner. Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson, Kirsten Nelson and Corbin Bernsen costar in the series.
“Psych” is currently in its sixth season on USA and it continues to be a reliable hit for the network. The second half of “Psych’s” season six will begin airing on Wednesday, February 29. The newly confirmed seventh season of “Psych” will likely begin in the fall of 2012, with sixteen new episodes.
And now, a quick blast to the past as we look back at a time when USA had a real psychic on the network. Well… real within the context of a scripted show. In the ultimate USA promo, Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) from “The Dead Zone” meets Shawn Spencer in a diner, as the hapless Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) sits nearby.
USA, make this crossover happen!
