They say blondes have more fun, but did you know people who adore blondes do, too? If there’s any doubt, Netflix’s new NC-17 biopic Blonde is about to prove our point. The movie, which was adapted from one of Joyce Carol Oates’ bestselling novels, stars Ana de Armas as the bombshell actress Marilyn Monroe.
De Armas described how she immersed herself in the character in order to play this role in an interview with Netflix Queue.
“We worked on this film for hours, every single day for almost a year,” she said. “I read Joyce’s novel, studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, films — anything I could get my hands on. Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph. We’d pore over every detail in the photo and debate what was happening in it. The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible.”
The black-and-white and color film takes a feminist slant, and its trajectory includes Monroe’s childhood, her rise to fame, and her complicated romantic life. In addition to Ana de Armas, the drama’s cast also includes acting heavyweights like Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel, and Evan Williams.
The film’s world premiere is taking place at the Venice Film Festival, where it is both highly anticipated and up against some stiff competition. Still, it is sure to grab the attention of critics and fans alike. The rest of us will have to wait until Sept. 28 to stream it on Netflix.
