We all know what the Mona Lisa looks like. If you’re anything like us, you’ve seen this priceless artwork of the infamous smirking lady in a book or online, but not in real life. Because let’s face it, it’s a pretty boring-looking painting. But if you did ever travel to Paris to see it at the Louvre, you’ve probably noticed that it’s surrounded by bulletproof glass. Why does it require such security besides its priceless nature, you might ask? Well, it’s to prevent people from trying to ruin it by smearing cake all over it. Does that seem far-fetched? That’s exactly what happened last weekend at the French museum.

It all went down in the Salle de Etats, the room where the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting can be viewed. Things seemed normal as the area around the painting was crowded with people trying to get a glimpse of the iconic painting. That’s when a man dressed as an old woman jumped out of a wheelchair and attempted to break the glass before smearing a piece of cake all over the iconic work of art. Oh yeah, he also spread rose petals everywhere for some reason.

Lucky for us, people enjoy filming and taking photos of the stoic woman, so there were many images and videos of the aftermath of the cake smearing. The man who slathered the picture in confectionary apparently did so because of a pro-Earth protest. As he was escorted away, he screamed in French, “Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.”

While this whole interaction was exciting for onlookers, no damage had actually been done to the painting. Museum staff wiped off the cake while the crowd clapped in approval. There’s a decent chance it was the only exciting thing to happen at the Louvre in decades.
