Humpback Whale Crashing Into Tourist Boat Not Listed on the Brochure

When you’re on a sightseeing trip, you want to get as up close and personal with nature as possible. Whether that’s swimming with the dolphins, touching a starfish, or watching a seal show, the point is to be both entertained and to interact with wildlife. But one group of tourists got the surprise of their life when their sightseeing boat collided with a huge humpback whale.

It all went down last Friday in La Paz, Mexico. Several travelers boarded a boat and went on a jaunt off the coast of Baja California Sur to see some whales. We don’t know what kind of excursion their tour guide promised the passengers, but what they got was a five-star disaster. While their boat was cruising through the waves, it apparently crashed into a humpback whale!

Viral video of the incident shows the vessel hurtling through the air, nose-up, like a deleted scene from some bastard child film of Point Break and Jaws.

According to reports, several passengers were thrown through the awning of the boat and one may have been thrown overboard. More than one was injured and some were even hospitalized. Another was transported by the Navy for medical treatment.

These kinds of sea animal accidents are becoming more and more common. “As population sizes of cetaceans increase in some areas and industries such as cruise lines, shipping, oil and gas exploration continue to grow to meet human pressures and the use of pleasure craft continues expand, an increase in cetacean collision events is occurring,” the Australian Marine Mammal Centre said.

The next time you sign up for a whale-watching venture, beware that you might get more of a “touch experience” than you ever bargained for. And fasten your life jacket!
