We all know that when you’re camping or enjoying an outdoor cookout in the wilderness, you shouldn’t leave tasty food out unattended for long periods of time. That is unless you want bears, raccoons, coyotes, and other animals invading your personal space looking for sustenance. At the least, animals drawn to food are a nuisance and at the most it can be downright dangerous. While we all know about the dangers of leaving food out while camping, few of us have ever thought about leaving food in a car unattended. Because that’s exactly how one wild story out of Arizona started.
Apparently, a javelina (also known as a peccary or skunk pig) followed the scent of Cheetos in a car and ended up on an exciting, albeit short car trip. According to a Facebook post from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona, deputies were called to a neighborhood aptly named Cornville because the precarious porker was stuck inside a Subaru station wagon.
But that’s not all. The car’s back door had been left open overnight and the pig managed to climb aboard following the scent of a bag of the cheesy snack left inside. Since javelinas aren’t known for their grace and agility, somehow it closed the back hatch and found itself trapped inside.
Of course it panicked after being unable to escape with its snack prize and in its frenzy, shifted to car into neutral and rolled the car out of the driveway, across the road, and into some trees. Deputies were able to free the animal but not before it caused extensive damage inside the car. The moral of the story? Never leave food somewhere an animal can get it and always check to make sure your car doors are closed.
