Meanwhile in India: Teen Wakes Up to Find Sickle Lodged in Skull, Also Dog Ate My Homework

We’ve all woken up with a kink in our neck after a bad night’s sleep. But as painful as that is, it doesn’t quite compare to the guy who woke up with a sickle in his head. (If that’s not a sign from the grim reaper, we don’t know what is.)

The unfortunate wake-up call happened when Bhuppu Sen, 16, rolled out of bed and onto the deadly farm tool he’d set down earlier after a long day working in the fields. The blade was kept so sharp, it pierced right through his skull. (Clearly, this kid has a head for sickles.) We can only imagine the awkward moment he turned on the light and looked in the mirror.

Unable to yank the curved blade out of his noodle, Sen headed to the hospital for a second opinion. Doctors performed a CT scan where they determined that yep, he did in fact have a giant sickle sticking out of his head. Despite being lodged quite deeply in his skull, the patient experienced no pain or loss of motor function. And other than the gasps from people on the street, he hardly knew it was there.

Unlike Phineas Gage, the man famous for living with an iron rod stuck through his entire face from chin to crown, Sen opted to have his unique accessory removed.

Surgeons carefully withdrew the blade in a 3-hour procedure (because apparently, it takes way longer to remove a sickle than have one installed). Afterward, Sen wisely vowed to sleep with his sickle in a different spot from here on out, having cheated death at his own game. Amazingly, the teen reported no visible side effects and is expected to make a full recovery.

Wow. There’s got to be an easier way to get out of work.
