Ben & Jerry’s Co-Founder Arrested For Blasting Fighter Jet Sounds Through Burlington

Just yesterday I was stuffing my face with Red Velvet Cake ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s, and while I don’t regret eating an entire pint of it, perhaps Ben Cohen, the co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, regrets blasting jet sounds from his truck.

It all kicked off when Cohen and other organizers teamed up to protest construction at the Vermont National Guard base that will feature 18 F-35’s. In other words, there will be jet sounds all day in Burlington, so Cohen and others did all they could to protest this — even attaching multiple speakers to a truck and blasting jet sounds to over 6,000 in order to show them what this could sound like if construction continues.

Since residents and businesses were heavily impacted by the noise, Cohen and others were arrested.

“It’s a disturbance once for the people that are going to hear this demonstration, it’s a disturbance, it is a physically and cognitively destructive impact on people’s lives who are going to live in this zone day in, day out,” Cohen said.

Cohen was quickly released after being served a ticket. But the protest didn’t do much as construction continues on the $80 million plan.
