Nobody likes stepping on a LEGO in their bare feet, but would it make you feel any better if said block was helping the environment?
No? Yeah, we didn’t figure as much. Those little buggers hurt like the dickens. Still, it’s quite the noteworthy and honorable venture that LEGO is embarking on, so we’ll give you the details anyways. Or rather, first we’ll let a video do the talking, then fill in the cracks.
If the talking plant monsters didn’t make it clear enough, LEGO has already started putting their plan into action, albeit only with their “botanical elements” (a.k.a. plant pieces). However, over the next 12 years, they want to up the ante to include all LEGO bricks being made from sustainable, plant-based plastic.

Here’s a little more detail from Tim Brooks, Vice President of Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group:
We are proud that the first Lego elements made from sustainably-sourced plastic are in production and will be in Lego boxes this year. This is a great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all Lego bricks using sustainable materials
Along with that, Brooks went on to say that no one will be able to tell a difference in quality of the product, as “plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene.” We’ll take his word for it for now (mostly because we have no clue what polyethylene even is).
