As if Florida (or this country in general) doesn’t have bigger issues, Florida decided to go out of their way and declare porn a health risk. Yes, the Florida Legislature actually said this.
Last month we told you that Florida was on the verge of making this official, well, the state’s House of Representatives approved the resolution by a vote on Tuesday, even though some members asked why in the hell this particular topic was being taken up at this time. The guy behind all this? Rep. Ross Spano, who is running for attorney general.
Spano, who may not be the brightest bulb, says there is “research” that shows a “connection between pornography use and mental and physical illnesses, forming and maintaining intimate relationships and deviant sexual behavior.”
The resolution states a need for education, research and policy changes to protect Floridians, especially teenagers, from pornography.
House Democrats in committees and on the floor have said the bill is a waste of the Legislature’s time and that more important bills and topics need to be heard. During a debate, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith asked Spano if pornography has killed or physically injured anyone. He went one step further in asking Spano if pornography has caused any first responders to seek counseling.
“I don’t understand the politics, to be honest, if I’m being honest. I’m not aware there’s a base of voters who are losing sleep every night over the epidemic of pornography as a public health crisis.”
There’s a mom right now in Florida biting her nails to the nub and worrying about the porn crises. I will bet anyone on that.
So yes, Florida is at it again and is completely backwards as usual.
