Chinese Woman’s 24-Hour Gaming Binge Probably Wasn’t Worth Going Blind Over

I totally get gaming binges, as my buddy and I have been getting together once a year for more than a decade now to shut off our phones, crack open a few cases of Miller Lite and play the latest “Madden” installment for two days in what we have dubbed “Maddenfest.”

But here’s the thing: After about 11 or 12 hours of gameplay, we go to bed.

According to the New York Post, a 21-year-old Chinese woman didn’t do that during her recent 24-hour gaming binge on her cellphone, and now she’s totally blind in at least one eye because of it. Even crazier is the fact that she said she noticed her eyesight dimming gradually, but that didn’t stop her from getting her game on. Only after everything went completely dark did she finally head to the hospital.

Doctors have diagnosed the woman, who’s using the alias of Wu Xiaojing, with retinal artery occlusion, and they said it’s a result of her one and only hobby: smartphone gaming. On a typical day, Xiaojing would allegedly wake up at 6:30 a.m. and play games on her phone until lunch. After lunch? You guessed it – more smartphone games “until as late as 2 a.m. before going to bed and starting again the following day.”

Doctors said only 20 to 35 percent of patients like Xiaojing ever regain “useful vision” after suffering retinal artery occlusion, so yeah, odds are she’s fucked.
