Last week, Syfy announced that the “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome” web series had been shifted into a TV movie with a possible new “Battlestar Galactica” TV series to follow.
Former “BSG” co-executive producer Michael Taylor wrote the script for “Blood & Chrome,” which takes place during the tenth year for the first Cylon War and roughly 40 years before the events of “Battlestar Galactica.” In the initial story, William Adama — back when he was still a young viper pilot — teams up with a rookie pilot in order to escort a woman on an important mission that may turn the tide of the war.
During a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, executive producer David Eick spoke about Beka Kelly, the new female character hinted at in the story description.
“’Blood & Chrome’ is loaded with new characters,” said Eick. “But I’d say the most compelling and unusual is the woman with whom Adama connects most deeply in the pilot — Beka Kelly, an enigmatic, seemingly impenetrable software genius who gives Adama a run for his money in more ways than one. She’s definitely in the tradition of ‘BSG’s’ and ‘Caprica’s’ uniquely strong, remarkable female characters and will be a huge casting opportunity for someone out there, whom we look forward to discovering.”
Eick also stressed that previous knowledge of “Battlestar Galactica” or its currently airing prequel “Caprica” will be needed to follow “Blood & Chrome.”
“[‘Blood & Chrome’] will definitely be informed by the history, as established in ‘Caprica,’ and the future, as established in ‘BSG,'” related Eick. “And, yet, neither of those things should matter. The goal with ‘Blood & Chrome’ is to appeal to our fan base, of course, but it’s primarily to reach out to new fans who do not have, and will not require, any allegiance to either previous show.”
Eick also hinted that characters from both of the previous shows could potentially appear as well.
“Blood & Chrome” is expected to go into production next year for a possible release date in late 2011 or early 2012.
