I know a lot of people who go the old “get married, start a family” route. And that’s all fine and dandy but it’s not for everyone — especially if you haven’t exactly found your soulmate. And one woman in Italy named Laura Mesi hasn’t found her soulmate yet. So what did she do? Well she married herself, that’s what.
Mesi, an Italian fitness trainer, decided that the best person she could marry was herself, so she went all out with an actual party filled with a wedding dress, a cake and even bridesmaids.
Here’s what Mesi told La Repubblica:
“I told friends and family that if I had not found my soul-mate by my 40th birthday I would marry myself […] If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future I’ll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him.”
Of course some people have bashed Mesi for this, calling her narcissistic. And yeah, she probably is, but hey, growing up people always tell you to love yourself so what better way to show that than by marrying yourself?
This “marriage” isn’t legally binding, but it has been dubbed “sologamy.” And according to Mesi she’s the first Italian woman to hold such a ceremony.
A wedding is super pricey, so if you’re going to spend thousands of dollars you may as well marry yourself.
Although I don’t know how hot that honeymoon night will be.
