Who among us hasn’t stumbled upon a fat sum of cash that someone mistakenly dropped at one point or another? At the very least, you’ve surely heard stories from friends or relatives who have. But the more important question regards what happens after that.

These days, you never quite know when you are on camera without your knowledge, so it’s probably best to do the right thing when it comes to finding large quantities of money in the street. Of course, this shouldn’t be your only motivation to be a decent human being, but if you’re ever in a similar situation as California teenager Tyler Opdyke, it will ultimately be worth keeping in mind.
It’s good, young kids like Tyler who make you really feel like a lump of crap when presented with hypothetical moral situations, because he makes the right decision in real time. Last week, while handing out fliers for his uncle’s pest control business, the teen noticed a billfold in the driveway of Melissa Vang and somehow had this response in his head, according to CBS Sacramento:
I just really thought about what I would want someone to do if I were to drop my wallet […] And then I thought about the house. I thought about the family who lived there.
Giving further credit where credit is due, Tyler then took the wallet up to Vang’s door, but she didn’t answer due to not recognizing him. So he did the only logical thing a good Samaritan such as himself could possibly do:
Just kidding. Tyler walked up to the security camera, showed the wallet with money in tow, and set it on the front porch. He even went back to check on it later. Only this time, Vang was there to greet him with a smile and then some.
I went back to go see if the money was still there because if it was, I was going to keep knocking. And that’s when Melissa and her two girls came out and we hugged.
When all was said and done, Tyler was told that the money belonged to Vang’s husband, and was to be used for a big meal the family was hosting. Sure, he only walked away with 150 bucks for his good deed, but he’s also been highly regarded as an inspiration for the past week, even appearing on Inside Edition as the cam footage has gone viral. Chalk that one up in the win column.
