Hair styles from more than two decades ago are becoming popular again. So you can imagine how I, a guy who spent much of his adolescence in the ’90s, see kids nowadays and recognize fresh cuts with tracks on the regular. Bravo, youths.
You know who doesn’t recognize fresh cuts, though? Old, whiny, oppressive, ignorant educators who don’t understand style, that’s who.
A school in Texas told one of its sixth-graders who had tracks cut into his hair that he needed to fix the hairstyle or face punishment, according to a recent report from CNN. Officials with Cedar Bayou Junior High in Baytown told Xavier Davis, the kid with the cut that should be recognized as nothing less than awesome, to either fix it or be suspended. Seriously? For a haircut?

“I was walking into class, and she saw my hair and said, ‘You can’t have two lines in your hair. Go to the office,'” Xavier told KPRC 2, the CNN affiliate in Houston.
But brace yourselves, because here’s where it gets extra dumb — the kid had this cut for about half a year before it became a problem.
Matt Davis, Xavier’s father, said “He’s had his hair cut like this for six months and now all of a sudden it’s a problem?” Xavier’s mother said she had to color in space on the kid’s head with a permanent marker to hide the tracks.
The huffy-puffy overlords at the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District told the station that “letters, symbols, and designs beyond a single straight line which draw attention to an individual shall not be permitted,” adding that an “administrator/supervisor reserves the right to determine if a hairstyle is disruptive to the educational process.”
Whatever you say, Super Nintendo Chalmers.
Last time I check, a haircut doesn’t exactly stop a teacher from teaching their lesson plan. Either way, someone needs to bring that teacher to a proper barber to teach them a thing or two. Perhaps a field trip is in order.
