Exclusive Video: Alejandro Jodorowsky on The Dance of Reality

Part 1: “Every one of us is a perfect human being, deformed by the family, the society and the culture.”

Alejandro Jodorowsky, one the greatest filmmakers we have ever interviewed at CraveOnline, is back with a new motion picture this month: The Dance of Reality, based on the director’s own childhood experiences, from his perspective as both an impressionable young boy as well as an older man looking back on that early time in his life. As is typical of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s work, nothing about it is typical. It’s a surreal but sincere portrayal of a child whose abusive father who leaves his wife and son to assassinate a dictator, but whose journey takes soul-rendering and unexpected path. If you have ever seen his classic surrealist western El Topo, in particular, this new film may help unlock the mysteries of his earlier work.

We caught up with Alejandro Jodorowsky to discuss The Dance of Reality, surrealism, the filmmakers that touched him, why he only makes a movie every 20 years and what he believes about art, audiences, Hollywood, and rebirth. We present this interview to you now in a two-part video taken at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival.

Part 2: “I don’t know if what I am doing is good, or is bad. I do.”

The Dance of Reality will be released in select theaters on May 23, 2014.
