Adam Sandler’s reign over Netflix has begun. According to The Wrap, Sandler’s deal to provide the streaming service with several streaming-only feature films will begin with a spoof western called Ridiculous 6, a slapstick farce of films like The Magnificent Seven and, perhaps more accurately, Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming period adventure The Hateful Eight. Sandler and Netflix had announced their deal back in October, and it cause a minor stir, as it was the first time a streaming service would have exclusive feature film content, as provided by a successful and bankable movie star. Some even called it the first step in the death of cinema. Although critics have also said that of VHS, the internet, and frankly of Sandler himself (if reviews of That’s My Boy are any indicator).

Sandler’s Ridiculous 6 was dropped by Warner Bros. back in October as well, which may have been the impetus for Sandler to make the deal he did.
Ridulous 6 has already amassed an enormous cast of Sandler regulars and several newcomers. According to The Wrap, the cast already includes the following people: Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Dan Aykroyd, Will Forte, Nick Swardson, Terry Crews, Jon Lovitz, Vanilla Ice, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, Danny Trejo, and Chris Parnell. Nick Nolte will have a role, and Taylor Lautner, who played the fratboy in Grown Ups 2, will also appear. The film’s plot will also somehow involve Wyatt Earp. No word as to the films’ rating or expected level of crassness.
If Ridiculous 6 proves to be successful, then it will perhaps cause other filmmakers and studios to release more “A” content for other streaming-only services. Will the day come when cinemas are seen as old-fashioned? Time will tell.
