Report: Matt Damon Returning for Bourne 5

Just yesterday, we found out that Universal was postponing the fifth Bourne movie they’d previously scheduled for August 15, 2015 to July 15, 2016. This was ostensibly done to hand that summer debut date to the studio’s NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.  Smart money theorized it was more likely done to give busy star Jeremy Renner as well as the production more time to complete the film without a massive release date problem looming over their collective heads.

But Latino Review says that’s NOT why Universal delayed production — it was done to get Matt Damon back to the franchise.

LR reported (in a story re-reported by Crave film site Cinema Blend) that Damon, who’s long squashed rumors (and dreams) of his return as Jason Bourne ever since 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, has agreed to reprise the role for director Justin Lin’s production.

Damon’s been very vocal about not returning to the series without Bourne Supremacy-Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass, but apparently, Lin, his screenplay, Universal’s checkbook or a combination of all three served to sway the star’s mind.

Does this mean we’ll get that highly anticipated meeting between Bourne and Renner’s Aaron Cross?  No way to know yet as Universal has so far been mum on the LR report, but we’ll see if their expected non-denial denial will shed any light on the subject…
