Mark Millar Responds to Jim Carrey’s Critique of Kick Ass 2

When Jim Carrey personally denounced Kick Ass 2, the next movie he’s in, because the violence in the film isn’t appropriate following the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, it was only a matter of time before someone responded.

Crave’s /Film site documented a lengthy reply from Mark Millar, who wrote the comic book the movie draws from. Millar wrote, in part:

Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I’m baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay eighteen months ago.

Millar added:

Like Jim, I’m horrified by real-life violence (even though I’m Scottish), but Kick-Ass 2 isn’t a documentary.

And:

Ultimately, this is his decision, but I’ve never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real-life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real-life.

We’ll see if Carrey’s decision to not support the film, with marketing or interviews, will impact the bottom line. Kick Ass 2 opens August 16.
