The Titanfall 2 release date clashes with the launch of Battlefield I, with EA announcing that both titles are scheduled for release in Q3 2016.
This time period, which runs from October through to December 2016, will now see the launch of EA’s two biggest shooters fall within the same release window, as Battlefield I is scheduled for release on October 21st. Considering that Titanfall is still a relatively new property, whereas Battlefield I is already among the most hotly anticipated FPS games of the year following its debut trailer, it’s certainly concerning news for Respawn Entertainment’s sci-fi shooter sequel.
The announcement was made by EA during a conference call with the company’s investors, with EA CEO Andrew Wilson being questioned about the curious decision to have both games occupying the same quarter of the financial year. Wilson replied: “This is a giant category in our industry – [a] $4.5 billion category. There’s a very broad and diverse set of players who play games in that category who are looking to fulfill different gameplay motivations. Some people play very quick-play, or something with more strategic play; some people want both in different contexts.”
Wilson continued: “The result of that is that we feel we actually have a really strong position to deliver the broadest set of gameplay mechanics as it relates to [the] first-person shooter genre across the two titles and feel very confident that we are well-positioned to do very well in that category in the year. Certainly you see the reception around Battlefield 1; we feel very good about that. The energy around Titanfall 2 is also building very nicely. We look forward to showing you more of both of those titles at EA Play in June.
While Titanfall 2 could potentially launch in a different month to Battlefield I, Wilson’s comments seem to suggest that EA is confident in releasing them around a similar time period because the company believes they appeal to different demographics. However, with so much excitement having been generated by Battlefield I‘s reveal trailer, it is definitely a possibility that Titanfall 2 would benefit from releasing in a different window altogether, considering that it will now also potentially clash with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare‘s launch on November 4th.
