The J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot films did a lot to save the franchise, but it also alienated some longtime Star Trek fans by taking the series away from its sci-fi roots in favor of big popcorn action. Those Star Trek reboot movies also significantly altered the previous history of the many Star Trek television series and the previous feature films. That led some Trekkers to openly wonder if the original Trek timeline would ever be revisited.
According to rumors originating on Birth Movies Death, the answer is yes. BMD is reporting that the new Star Trek series in development by Bryan Fuller is taking place at some point between Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek: The Next Generation in the original timeline. Given that Fuller hired Star Trek II and Star Trek VI director, Nicholas Meyer for the new series, this isn’t a shock. But it does appear to be a step in the right direction…if the report pans out.
BMD added that the new series will not take place on an Enterprise, and Klingons will once again be featured as villains. That actually fits in with the established history. After Star Trek VI, there were still Klingons who weren’t sold on the concept of peace with the Federation. That lingering resentment seems like a good motive for some Klingon adversaries.

After the initial report, BMD added that the new Star Trek will be “a seasonal anthology,” which means it could change casts and the time setting between each season. That’s intriguing, but none of this is currently confirmed. And if the show goes in this direction, it would be the first Star Trek television series that wasn’t locked into a select group of characters for multiple seasons.
CBS All Access has the Star Trek reboot series scheduled to premiere in 2017.
