Newly installed ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey is already leaving her mark on the network by giving 15 shows an early renewal, including Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which will return for its fourth season in fall 2016.
But the news isn’t all good for Marvel TV. Agent Carter is very much on the bubble after its second season finale scored the lowest ratings of the series to date. Despite star Hayley Atwell’s public desire to return for a third season, Agent Carter could be the very first live-action Marvel TV series in the modern era to be canceled by a network. The writing was on the wall when ABC cast Atwell in the lead of a new legal pilot called Conviction. While Atwell could conceivably do both shows, it’s not very likely.

Even though Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s future is secure, that show could be very different next season, if Marvel’s Most Wanted is picked up. Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter are starring in the Marvel’s Most Wanted pilot, which reportedly has both of their characters on the run for crimes they didn’t commit. The recently released description of the pilot episode made it sound as if S.H.I.E.L.D. was no longer around to help Bobbi and Hunter. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would also have a significant void to fill if it lost two of its best characters to the spinoff.
It’s possible that Marvel’s Most Wanted could be the new bridge series that takes over the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. timeslot between the fall and spring seasons. But given the fact that Agent Carter hasn’t found an audience in that period, it suggests that ABC may try something new in that timeslot during the winter months.
