Superhero movies are serious business nowadays, which is already kind of funny if you think about it. After geeks spent decades demanding that their comic book films get taken seriously, we’re actually at a point where pointing out just how ridiculous superhero conventions are (in films like The Dark Knight Rises and Iron Man 3) can actually make fans of those franchise turn feral.
But funny superhero movies are still all the rage, because these films are (mostly) designed to entertain the masses, and everyone loves to laugh: long and loud and clear. They may not always be marketed as “comedies” but many Marvel Studios films in particular have more thigh-slappers than the old-fashioned comedies that wind up at the multiplex lately.
Case in point: Deadpool, an ultraviolent, extremely sexual and highly subversive film that injects wholly inappropriate behavior into an existing superhero franchise. It’s one thing to create new superheroes and take them down a peg, it’s another thing altogether to peg a superhero from one of the X-Men movies. Deadpool may have a few problems but it’s bold, satisfying comedy entertainment, and now it’s time to consider where it ranks amongst the funniest superhero comedies ever made.
So sit back and take a look at the superhero movies that made us shoot our overpriced movie theater beverages out of our nose, whether or not they were technically the “best” superhero movies.
