For the first time in over ten years, a new Star Trek TV series is officially on the way. It just won’t be on television!
StarTrek.com has announced plans for a new Star Trek series to launch in January 2017 from executive producer Alex Kurtzman, one of the co-writers of the first two Star Trek reboot films. But in a twist, only the first episode of the new Star Trek will air on CBS before the series moves to its new home on CBS All Access, the network’s subscription streaming service. This isn’t the first time that Star Trek has been used to sell a new network. UPN (currently alive as The CW) launched in 1994 with Star Trek: Voyager.
Given Kurtzman’s involvement, it’s likely that the new Star Trek TV series will tie into the rebooted feature films. But no other information about the series is currently available other than this statement: “The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

CBS had resisted previous attempts to get a new Star Trek TV series on the air, and that’s why there won’t be a Star Trek show in time for the 50th Anniversary in 2016.
“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,” said CBS President David Stapf without a hint of irony. “Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
