Hulu Orders Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ To Series

In 2003, Marvel attempted to give its comics a modern twist with anime style sensibilities in the Tsunami imprint. But only one of those comics truly caught on: Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The series had an ingenuous hook, which revealed that a group of kids had discovered that their parents were a supervillain team known as the Pride. The children rebelled and went on the run with the intent to defeat their parents and to atone for their sins. For years, Marvel attempted to bring this comic to the big screen, but last year, a deal was reached to film a Runaways pilot episode for Hulu. Now, it’s officially going to be a TV series!

At an upfront presentation in New York, Hulu announced that the Runaways TV series will launch in 2018. The O.C. and Gossip Girl veterans Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will serve as co-showrunners for the series. The episode count was not included in the announcement.

Hulu also released a cast photo for the teens at the forefront of the series. From left to right, that’s Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, the daughter of time-traveling criminals; Lyrica Okano as the teenage sorceress, Nico Minoru;  Rhenzy Feliz as team leader, Alex Wilder; Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein, the son of a pair of mad scientists, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, a teen whose parents may not be from Earth, and Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez. In the comics, Molly was a super strong female mutant, but that will probably be changed for the MCU. Molly’s powers may stay the same, but she certainly won’t be a mutant.

If that image looks familiar to you, it’s probably because it was clearly inspired by this cover of the Runaways team.

It’s not a perfect match, but it’s hard not to appreciate the attempted homage. And it looks like Molly will be considerably older in the TV series than she was in the comic book.
