Jack Nicholson Returns to Acting With ‘Toni Erdmann’ Remake

Reports of Jack Nicholson’s retirement have (apparently) been exaggerated. The celebrated star of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s NestBatman and The Departed is returning to the big screen in a remake of the German dramedy Toni Erdmann.

The original Toni Erdmann, written and directed by Maren Ade, is nominated for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Academy Awards. It stars Peter Simonischek as a practical jokester father who invents a fake persona called “Toni Erdmann” and insinuates himself into his estranged daughter’s work life. According to Variety, Maren Ade will executive produce the remake for Paramount, along with recent Oscar winner Adam McKay (The Big Short).

Although Jack Nicholson made no formal pronouncements, the Oscar-winning actor was considered more-or-less retired, after having made no on-screen appearances since the James L. Brooks comedy How Do You Know, back in 2010. The 79-year-old actor hasn’t taken a starring role in a movie since 2007’s The Bucket List.

There has been no word yet on who would write or direct the American remake of Toni Erdmann, or who would play Jack Nicholson’s daughter in the film. But anyone who is interested in seeing it can watch the original Toni Erdmann right now, because it’s still in limited release.
