Nearly 30 years ago, director Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys became a cult classic horror comedy. And now it may be coming to television from the creator of Veronica Mars.
Deadline broke the story that Rob Thomas (iZombie) is developing The Lost Boys for television. The original movie took place during the ’80s in Santa Carla, California as a pair of teenage boys found themselves forced to deal with the vampires who were already living in the town. The cast included Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, Edward Herrmann, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander, and Barnard Hughes.
Rather than simply retelling the story of the movie, Thomas apparently envisions The Lost Boys as a seven season series that will take place in a different decade each season. The first season would be set in San Francisco during the so-called “Summer of Love” in 1967. Basically, the vampire characters would be back each season, but the human characters and the antagonists would change every year.

In theory, that setup could allow Thomas to revisit the original story and keep it in the ’80s during the third season. If he’s feeling particularly adventurous, Thomas could even keep the film in continuity. That’s the approach that Fargo has used, with only a few elements tying the film and the first two seasons together. The CW is also reportedly looking to this show as a potential replacement for The Vampire Diaries, which is ending after next season.
Fans of the original Lost Boys should note that Vertigo Comics is revisiting those characters this fall in a new miniseries.
