Stranger Hacks into Baby Monitor and Shouts Abuse at Child

A stranger hacked into a family’s baby monitor and began shouting at their child via its built-in camera, FOX19 has reported.

The report states that a hacker had gained access to the camera due to a firmware vulnerability, with the hacker shouting at the baby to “wake up” before the child’s father Adam Schreck entered the room. Adam states that the camera then moved to face him, before the hacker began shouting at him, too.

The mother of 10-month-old Emma, Heather Schreck, claims that the stranger was yelling at her child: ‘Wake up baby. Wake up baby.’ Then [he was] just screaming at her trying to wake her up.”

The monitor, developed by Foscam, is the latest in a few examples of hackers being able to access baby monitors. In August 2013, ABC13 reported that a hacker accessed a baby monitor in Houston before screaming “Wake up you little s***” at the child.

Reports state that Foscam’s firmware vulnerability is caused by outdated software, with PCWorld having already made a note of many security issues with Foscam products being raised by customers in the company’s technical support forums.
