iOS 10 launched yesterday, with it being one of the biggest updates to Apple’s mobile operating system thus far. However, while the early consensus is that it’s a great improvement upon the previous iOS, some users have still reported some pretty major problems that have even led to the update bricking their iPhone or iPad.
Though Apple stated that a further software update has helped fix these issues, there are still users reporting that their iPhone/iPad has been bricked after installing iOS 10. If you fall into this unlucky camp of people, then you need to take the steps below to recover your device. If you have yet to install iOS 10 but are worried that the update will brick your device, then you must first ensure that you have created a backup of your data. Before installing any new software update, it is always preferable to create a backup to ensure that if anything goes wrong during the installation process, you will not lose any of your saved data.
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to your desktop or laptop.
- Connect to iTunes using the desktop/laptop. You must ensure that you have the latest version of the software installed so that it supports iOS 10.
- Press and hold both the Sleep and Home buttons on your iPhone or iPad.
- Wait for your device to enter into recovery mode, with it then prompting you to connect it to iTunes.
- iTunes will then display a prompt asking if you wish to continue to update or restore your device. If you wish to continue your upgrade to iOS 10, select upgrade. If you wish to remain on iOS 9, select restore.
- Wait for the update to finish.
After following these steps your iPhone/iPad should be back in working order, and ready to install iOS 10 once again.
The latest iOS update continues multiple improvements over previous iterations, including an overhauled Messages app which allows you to send doodles, music clips and Snapchat-esque short videos, an improved News app displaying the day’s top stories, more thorough lock screen notifications and widgets along with an upgraded Siri. The update has released just in time for the iPhone 7’s launch, which is set to make its way to customers starting September 16.
