Indian Motorcycles hasn’t competed in the flat track racing world since the 1950s. Now, it’s jumping back into the fray mere weeks after American motorcycle rival Harley-Davidson announced its own return to the dirt tracks. For lovers of motorcycle racing, this should be fun.
Indian Motorcycles will return to the AMA Pro Flat Track with an all-new, proprietary, liquid-cooled 750cc four-valve, V-Twin racing-inly engine specially designed for flat track competition. That engine will be mounted onto a chassis specially built by The Indian Motorcycle Racing Team.

Riding the Indian Motorcycles machine will be multiple AMA Grand National Champion Jared Mees. He’s serving as the Indian Motorcycle Racing Team as a test rider after winning an AMA Grand National Twins Championship in 2009, AMA Grand National Singles Championship in 2012 and the unified AMA Grand National Championship in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
A look at Indian Motorcycle’s history in flat track shows dominance at one time. Of course, longtime rival and motorcycle manufacturing giant Harley-Davidson has its own history in the dirt. The latter introduced a new bike into AMA Pro Flat Track recently, setting up a rejoining of the decades-long racing battles between the two American companies.
Harley-Davidson’s new XG750R, racing-only motorcycle hit active duty on the track last month. While Indian Motorcycles won’t enter official competition until their on-track testing is completed, the Harley-Davidson machine is already racing — leaving motorcycle racing fans waiting eagerly for word on when the two companies will finally lock handlebars.
