The 40 (Other) Best Superhero Movies Ever Made

By now, just about everyone has their favorite superhero movie more or less figured out. And if the box office numbers are any indication of which superhero movies people have actually seen, the odds are exceptionally good that your favorite was adapted from a Marvel or DC comic book. Your Batmans. Your Spider-Mans. Your Avengers. Your X-Men.

And while films based on all of these mega-franchises completely dominate the box office they also have the unfortunate tendency to take over the conversation and marginalize a lot of the other great (or at least pretty good) superhero movies that have come out over the years. Whether they were based on different types of comics, or on pulp novels, or on completely original concepts, these films also deserve credit for being a part of this ongoing pop culture phenomenon. What’s more, their filmmakers sometimes deserve oodles of praise for keeping this genre going, even during the many decades when conventional Hollywood wisdom suggested that nobody cared about a superhero unless he was Batman (and even then not always).

So today, Crave celebrates the OTHER best superhero movies, 40 of them to be exact, from the silent era through the present day. These are all films that feature masked vigilantes, power fantasies, secret identities, or at least some combination of those tropes. Honestly, the line between a superhero movie and an action movie can be a little bit thin, but we think we’ve got a good grasp on what qualifies.

Check out the films on our list, let us know what we’ve forgotten (because there’s always something, isn’t there?) and let’s keep these classic and sometimes not-so-classic movies alive, before Marvel and DC completely officially corner the marketplace forever.
