Activision has created a problem for themselves after releasing a joint announcement trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered, with the majority seemingly far more excited for the remake of the 2007 FPS than the brand new game.
The official reveal trailer for the new game currently has around 100,000 dislikes on YouTube, a number which greatly exceeds the number of dislikes generated by Black Ops 3, Advanced Warfare and Ghosts. The prevailing opinion among fans of the series seems to be that while they are excited to play Modern Warfare Remastered, there is a growing level of ambivalence towards new entries in the series, with Infinite Warfare’s move to space failing to please those who are more interested in returning to the franchise’s “boots on the ground” gameplay.

While a YouTube dislike bar is obviously not an indication of how well-received Infinite Warfare will be upon its release, the negative reaction to the new game and the positive reaction to Modern Warfare Remastered does provide a lot of insight into the problems Call of Duty is experiencing as a series. With many pushing for CoD to return to its roots, that so many are bemoaning a brand new CoD installment while simultaneously frothing at the mouth for a remake of the nine-year-old Call of Duty 4 could well stand to incite a change in direction for the series in the future, depending on the commercial and critical reception for Infinite Warfare.
The YouTube like/dislike ratios for all the current-gen Call of Duty releases.
Activision has decided to bundle Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered with the Legacy edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, with consumers able to purchase the two games together for $79.99. The publisher has announced that the remaster won’t be sold as a standalone game.
Though Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will inevitably be hugely successfully in terms of sales, with its inclusion of Modern Warfare Remastered likely set to bolster its profits by a considerable amount, the disparity between its reception and the one reserved for the Call of Duty 4 remake is noteworthy. It remains to be seen which of these two games’ multiplayer components leave more of an impression upon the current console generation, but judging from initial reactions it seems likely that Call of Duty 4 will become one of console gaming’s most popular online games all over again.
