Halfway through the four series deal with Marvel, the Netflix original series Daredevil and Jessica Jones have emerged as two of the best shows on TV. Now the question is whether Luke Cage can keep that critical and fan success going when it debuts later this year.
Last night at the Captain America: Civil War world premiere, Entertainment Weekly caught up with Luke Cage showrunner and executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker. And Coker wasn’t shy about what he wants the series to be.
“We’ve got the Marvel action,” said Coker. “We’ve got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues.”
Being The Wire is a tall order for any series, even The Wire! But given the way that Daredevil and Jessica Jones tackled darker themes and storylines, Coker at least has the benefit of the doubt that Luke Cage can follow their lead and potentially go even further.

Luke Cage star Mike Colter also attended the red carpet, and he promised that fans of his character would be happy, while jokingly indicating that Cage won’t necessarily be wearing his classic ’70s era costume.
“We’re going to make sure everybody’s happy, but don’t expect a yellow shirt every day,” said Colter. “Let’s put it that way… We brought it to mustard. We started there. We knocked it down a bit. Not so bright.”
All 13 episodes of Luke Cage are slated to premiere on September 30. Considering that both Daredevil and Jessica Jones were renewed for second seasons, the odds of Luke Cage going past 13 episodes are probably high. Daredevil hasn’t officially been renewed for a third season yet, but that order will likely be made at some point this year.
