It’s 1983, and the end of the world has begun in the latest trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse!
You’ll barely recognize Poe Dameron under underneath Oscar Isaac’s mountain of makeup as Apocalypse, one of the X-Men’s biggest foes in the comic book universe. But for the purposes of this film, Apocalypse awakens in the ’80s and he’s really not happy about the state of the world or the status of mutants. That means he’s going to devastate the Earth and remake the survivors in his image. Because in his mind, only the strong should survive.
Much like his comic book counterpart, Apocalypse has gathered four horsemen to serve as his agents of destruction: Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Angel (Ben Hardy). To stand against them, there’s a whole new generation of X-Men including Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), with Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) stepping up to play a leadership role on the team alongside a very bald James McAvoy as Professor Xavier.
It has to be said that one of the main reasons that Mystique is getting so much play in these movies is because of Lawrence’s status as a superstar. If this really is Lawrence’s last movie as Mystique, then that spotlight will probably fade.
In the meantime, here’s a brand new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, which is chock full of inspirational speeches, cool mutant action, and a lot of broken bridges. To me, my X-Men!
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27.
