The First Real Ghostbusters Trailer is Scary Good

After releasing one of those bullshit “teaser for a teaser” trailers, the kind that trends on social media and tricks fans into watching it while revealing absolutely nothing of interest, they have released an actual, real Ghostbusters trailer. And guess what? It’s pretty solid.

The film, directed by Paul Feig (Spy), stars Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (The Heat), Kate McKinnon (Sisters) and Leslie Jones (Top Five) as paranormal investigators who are investigating the paranormal. Although they don’t share their names with the original team of Ghostbusters from the 1984 classic, the trailer clearly shows that there are some parallels. Kristen Wiig is an optimistic Dan Aykroyd type, Kate McKinnon is an inventor Harold Ramis type, Melissa McCarthy is a showboat Bill Murray type, and Leslie Jones is a non-scientist Ernie Hudson type. And unlike Ernie Hudson’s character in the original, who only showed up because the Ghostbusters were hiring, Jones’s character is given something to contribute in the film: local knowledge and also the car, Ecto-1.

The trailer confusingly reminds us that the original Ghostbusters busted ghosts decades ago (and also inaccurately claims that Winston was a scientist) before dropping us right into the middle of a world where they didn’t do that. Our new heroes live out the library scene from the original film, which goes in a somewhat different direction, before unloading new ideas like a machine that boosts paranormal energy and ghosts – as opposed to the demon dogs from the 1984 film – that can possess you.

The new Ghostbusters trailer has a distinctive look, some moments that made us laugh out loud, and it raises some questions about the plot we would like to see answered. Watch it for yourself and mark your calendars, because Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 15, 2016.
