The Golden Raspberry Awards, affectionately (or at any rate efficiently) nicknamed “The Razzies,” have once again announced their picks for the worst motion pictures of the year. And as usual, they have done so just one day before The Oscars, because search engine optimization is everything. Also, as usual, the Razzies have a handful of gimmicky stunts that seem interesting in theory but in practice play like a desperate ploy to make headlines out of low-hanging fruit.
This year’s gimmicks are a so-called “Razzie Redeemer” award for Sylvester Stallone, whom the awards body had previously declared “The Worst Actor of the Century” back when it was popular to mock him. Now that he’s earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, however, it seems more noteworthy to apologize for making fun of Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot and Judge Dredd.
The other big news is that, for the first time in over 25 years, the top award for Worst Picture was a tie. Fantastic Four and Fifty Shades of Grey were both declared to be the worst that cinema had to offer in 2015, and even that’s not so much of a novelty. It’s actually the third tie for Worst Picture in the history of the Razzies, after Howard the Duck and Under the Cherry Moon tied in 1986, and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane and Ghosts Can’t Do It tied in 1990.
The rest of the Razzies were mostly divvied up amongst Fantastic Four and Fifty Shades of Grey, with Fifty Shades winning Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Screen Combo and Worst Screenplay. Fantastic Four also won Worst Director and Worst Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel. The other two awards, for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, were awarded to Eddie Redmayne (who gives a legendarily flamboyant performance in Jupiter Ascending) and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting (who was apparently in both The Wedding Ringer and Alvin & The Chipmunks: Road Chip while no one was looking).
The complete list of winners is below. A short list of the many times The Razzies got it wrong is below that.
