Sarah Rose McDaniel is the “Instagram celebrity” who is now the face of one of the most significant overhauls in magazine publishing history. With news that Playboy was going nudity-free, a result of declining sales and a drastic overhaul of their website that had led to a dramatic, 400-percent rise in traffic, the outlet is now attempting to open itself up to a younger audience.
The first issue since the magazine went SFW (kinda) features 20-year-old model Sarah Rose McDaniel posing with her hand angled to look as though she is holding the camera, with a Snapchat caption box appearing beneath the image, reading: “heyyy ;)”
The cover was intended to look at Sarah “from a boyfriend’s perspective,” the model says, and highlights the magazine’s intentions to court a younger, more Internet-savvy audience. Employing the talents of Sarah, then, was a good move, considering she boasts over a quarter of a million followers on Instagram.
Sarah has managed to grow her online following by way of snapshots of her modeling sessions, which have attracted a lot of attention by virtue of her distinct look. Sarah has a case of heterochromia irdum, a condition that means her eyes are two different colors – one brown, the other blue.
Playboy will be hoping that their new focus upon a millennial audience will help attract new subscribers, resurrecting the magazine from the dead just as they have done their website. Alongside Sarah Rose McDaniel, the company has also enlisted the modeling talents of Dree Hemingway for its centerfold, the great-granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway. James Franco is also listed among the magazine’s new contributors.
