Who’s Up For a Scooby-Doo Apocalypse?!

In the last few years, Archie Comics had a breakout hit called Afterlife with Archie that placed the classic Archie characters in a zombie apocalypse. But this May, DC Comics is adopting the same approach to several classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon properties in a new line of comic books.

Entertainment Weekly broke the story about the new series, which includes a new Scooby-Doo comic by Jim Lee, Howard Porter, Keith Giffen. The title essentially explains the premise: Scooby Apocalypse.

“I hope that they put a smile on people’s faces,” said Lee, who drew the cover posted above and he will also be writing Scooby Apocalypse. “I think we think of these characters so much as our childhood, and I want people to kind of embrace these updated versions of the characters and really understand that at the core, these concepts are not just limited to little kids.”

The new Hanna-Barbera comics will launch in May, with The Flintstones by writer Mark Russell and redesigns by artist Amanda Conner. Wacky Race Land is getting the Mad Max: Fury Road treatment by Ken Pontac and Mark Sexton, who actually worked as a designer on Fury Road. In addition to the previously mentioned Scooby Apocalypse, Future Quest will unite all of the classic action-adventure Hanna-Barbera heroes including Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, and The Herculoids. Jeff Parker, Evan “Doc” Shaner, and Darwyn Cooke will be the creative team on Future Quest.

“You’re gonna have an epic adventure in the future stories with Johnny Quest and Space Ghost,” explained DiDio. “You’re going to have a scary, dangerous world in Wacky Race Land that is just as strange and dynamic as you hope it would be. I think Scooby Doo is going to excite people and challenge people, and I think that we’re going to use Flintstones to really bring out that voice and social commentary that they might’ve brought out in the ’60s and raise it back for today.”
