Star Wars: The Force Awakens has met with moderate success in the film marketplace in the last month, having earned, according to BoxOfficeMojo, over $861 million to date (and that’s just domestically). Disney plans on releasing a new episode in this central saga every other year until they films become unpopular, with the the as-yet untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII – the 13th Star Wars film – set for release on May 26th, 2017. Clearly trying to duplicate the massive Holiday box office gained by The Force Awakens – and perhaps needing a little extra time to complete the film – Disney has elected to move the release of Star Wars 8 to December 15th, 2017.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick), and will begin principal photography in London next month. J.J. Abrams, the writer and director of The Force Awakens, will remain on board as an executive producer.
