Sprouting from that sweet spot where soulfulness and vulnerability intermingle, and yet never falling into the shudder-inducing wussiness so often confused with soul man crooning nowadays, Jack Garratt is the latest beige Brit to claim a seat in the royal chamber of modern day soul music.
Yet another “bedroom producer,” his aesthetic is both insular and far-reaching, with his last few singles showing a quickly deepening and growing talent. There’s a little James Blake, a little Lewis Taylor, a dash of Frank Ocean (whom he cites as a major influence) and scores of usual-suspect American R&B icons in both his vocal stylings and approach to production.
His new single “Worry” follows fast on the heels of “Breathe Life,” with both tracks setting the stage for his album Phase, set to drop in February of next year. Winner of this year’s British Critic’s Choice Award (the same one that kicked off Sam Smith’s and Adele’s careers) he’s already all but made. Get acquainted with him before his stateside tour next year.
