If you’re a regular watcher of Showtime’s Shameless, then you’ve no doubt noticed that the Gallagher family is just plain unlucky in love. Although “unlucky” may not be the right word. Instead, try “self-destructive.” The Gallaghers have plenty of real enemies in their neighborhood, but they sabotage their own happiness more often than not.
In CraveOnline’s exclusive video from the upcoming Shameless Season 5 Blu-ray, executive producer Nancy M. Pimental explores the Gallaghers’ unhappy love lives and reveals her theory as to why the family will always be looking for love in all the wrong places. Cast members William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum also weigh in on the topic.
The short version is that it’s the fault of Frank (Macy) and Monica (Chloe Webb). Fiona (Rossum), Ian (Cameron Monaghan), Debbie (Emma Kenney), and Lip (Jeremy Allen White) got a first hand view of the disintegration of Frank and Monica’s marriage, the constant fighting, and the way that their relationship destroyed them.
On the other hand, Frank and Monica had a passion that none of their children have been able to reproduce in their own love lives. That’s why Rossum contends that the Gallaghers don’t actually trust “love” as a concept. It’s just not something that they can fully understand or experience.
Shameless Season 5 is hitting Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, December 29. The new season of Shameless will premiere on January 10, 2016 on Showtime.
