Oscar prognosticators are left scratching their heads this morning as Trumbo, a film few were seriously considering as a major awards contender, walked away with more Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations than any other films. Granted, that’s only three nominations, but SAG only has five categories to begin with.
Trumbo stars Bryan Cranston as infamously blacklisted author Dalton Trumbo, and Helen Mirren in a supporting role as renowned gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. Both actors were nominated by the Screen Actors Guild, who also nominated the film for Best Ensemble Cast (the group’s equivalent of Best Picture, more or less). Mirren was also nominated for Best Actress for Woman in Gold, a drama released earlier in the year that many predicted would also be an also-ran this season.
Additional surprises from the SAG Awards include Sarah Silverman’s nomination for Best Actress, for I Smile Back, and Jacob Tremblay’s Best Supporting Actor nomination for Room. But perhaps more notable are the many so-called frontrunners who were left off the ballot entirely: Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo received no individual nominations for the awards season favorite Spotlight (although the film was nominated for Best Ensemble Cast and Best Supporting Actress) and The Hateful Eight, The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road and Creed received no nominations at all.

The SAG Awards nominations are usually a decent prognosticator for the Oscars, although not everyone who votes for the SAG Awards votes for the Oscars, and some variations on the ballots are inevitable. If you’re handicapping the race at home, start paying attention to these nominations and other guild awards nominations as they are announced.
