Last year at New York Comic Con, Legendary TV announced plans to remake Irwin Allen’s classic Lost In Space TV series. Now the potential revival series finally has a home on Netflix.
Deadline is reporting that Lost In Space was the subject of a bidding war, and that Netflix’s winning bid includes a potential straight-to-series order. The original Lost In Space debuted on TV in 1965 and ran for three seasons. The series followed the Robinson family, who had intended to become the first humans to colonize Alpha Centauri. When Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) attempted to sabotage the Robinson’s ship, he was stranded on the vessel with the family as it was sent hopelessly off course into space.

A Lost In Space movie was released in 1998, and there was even a Lost In Space TV pilot that was directed by John Woo in 2003 that failed to take off at The WB. The new Netflix incarnation of Lost In Space is being written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold), with Game of Thrones helmer Neil Marshall expected to direct the pilot episode.
Netflix reportedly wants the new Lost In Space to be “big scale, four-quadrant family entertainment.” That’s Hollywood-speak for “they want it to be Star Wars.” The tone of the new series is said to be “epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds.”
Fine…but if they leave out Dr. Smith or the Robot then it’s not really Lost In Space!
