Director Quentin Tarantino has made no secret of his love of comic books. One of his earliest uncredited screenwriting gigs for Crimson Tide threw in a very overt reference to the Silver Surfer. “Everybody who reads comic books knows that the Kirby Silver Surfer is the only true Silver Surfer.” Well, personally, I’d add John Buscema and Ron Lim to that list of the best Silver Surfer artists, but fair enough.
Tarantino’s scripts often refer back to comics in some way, and he even collaborated with writer Matt Wagner on Dynamite Comics’ Django/Zorro crossover in 2014. Next month, Tarantino is unleashing his eighth film, The Hateful Eight in a limited 70mm release before the film goes wide in early 2016. And this time, Tarantino is handling the comic scripting himself, alongside artist Zach Meyer.

The new issue of Playboy Magazine (which hits the stands this Friday, November 13) features an eight page comic book prologue for The Hateful Eight that reveals how a few of the main characters encountered each other. Samuel L. Jackson’s Major Marquis Warren meets legendary bounty hunter, John Ruth (Kurt Russell) for the second time…and Ruth is not entirely convinced that Warren isn’t out to swipe his bounty on Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a very foul mouthed fugitive accused of murder.
You can read the complete Hateful Eight story at Playboy.com. Fair warning the language in the completed eight page comic is NSFW.
The Hateful Eight will ride into selected theaters on December 25, 2015, before going wide on January 8, 2016.
