Last night, CBS officially debuted Supergirl, the new television series featuring former Glee star Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl. Mehcad Brooks co-stars as as a very different take on Jimmy Olsen (no one is ever gonna call him “James!”), Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Kara’s adoptive sister, Alex Danvers: Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, Jr. and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw.
Fans of the Superman comics may notice that Winn and Henshaw share names with the villains known as Toyman and the Cyborg Superman. Potentially, they could also become evil on Supergirl. But in the near future, Kara’s biggest enemy will be someone very close to her.
As revealed in the closing moments of the Supergirl pilot, Kara’s aunt Astra (Laura Benanti) is on Earth and she’s targeting her own niece to strike back at Kara’s mother, Alura Zor-El (also played by Benanti). Astra may be even more powerful than Kara as well.
CBS has debuted the new Supergirl Season 1 trailer that skips ahead to Kara’s first encounter with Astra since they lived on Krypton…and it doesn’t go well for the rookie superheroine. We also see Kara have very contentious exchanges with Cat Grant as both herself and her costumed alter ego.
The trailer also plays up the potential romance between Kara and Jimmy while setting up other villains in the series, including the Red Tornado!
Supergirl Season 1 airs Mondays on CBS.
