New York Comic Con 2015 | The Iron Man / Avengers Panel Report

During the Iron Man/Avengers panel at New York Comic Con, Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort gave a non-denial denial regarding Civil War 2, the widely rumored comic book sequel to the 2007 storyline which is fueling the Captain America: Civil War movie. Instead, Brevoort announced a smaller scale crossover event.

In March 2016, all of the Avengers books will come together in Avengers: Standoff, a crossover storyline that celebrates the 75th anniversary of Captain America.

The story revolves around a seemingly peaceful small town named Pleasant Hill, which is hiding a dark secret. Original Captain America Steve Rogers will be the first Avenger sucked into the town’s mysteries, and the other Avengers will be called in to help Rogers when he is attacked.

Joining Brevoort on the panel were Ant-Man and Sam Wilson: Captain America writer Nick Spencer, Uncanny Avengers writer Gerry Duggan, Angela: Queen of Hel writer Marguerite Bennett, Ultimates writer Al Ewing, Black Knight writer Frank Tieri, Totally Awesome Hulk writer Greg Pak, and Josh Williamson.

Brevoort and Duggan hinted that X-Men fans may be upset by upcoming events in Uncanny Avengers, while Tieri noted that the Avengers Unity Squad will be going after Black Knight. The Black Knight comic was jokingly called “Breaking Blade” to tease a darker turn for the title character.

The rest of the panel was fairly light on news, but the cover for All-New, All-Different Avengers # 4 was revealed, and it featured Sam Wilson kissing the female Thor (Jane Foster), which is an usual romantic pairing that has never been done before. Spencer also hinted that Sam Wilson will get a new sidekick in the pages of Captain America.

More Marvel announcements are expected to come later this weekend at New York Comic Con, particularly during Joe Quesada’s panel on Saturday.
